After our lunch at SFGC it was off to our second round of the trip at Lake Merced Golf Club.

The club has a place in the history of golf in San Francisco for sure.  Founded in 1922, within a year of opening it hosted a match between Gene Sarazen and the reigning British Open champion, Arthur Havers.  Quite an event for a young club!

Later in the 1920’s Alister MacKenzie did some redesign work.  Moving into the 1930’s the club was a frquent host to the San Francisco Open.  The arrival of Interstate 280 in the 1960’s caused more change.  Subsequent work on the course has been done by Robert Muir Graves and Rees Jones.  A 2010 switch from poa annua to bent grass greens is a highlight of these changes. This course is one of the hidden gems if you aren’t in the know.  It is old school Donald Ross having been established in 1906 as a nine-holer and expanded a few years later.  There is an extensive history on the course website that I invite you to look over.

The truly great thing about this course is the value.  It is probably the best value in the area as you get a classic Ross course for well under $100 and sometimes below $50.  You will see Ross’s fingerprints all over the photos. Continue reading “Southern Pines Golf Club”

Legacy is another one of the courses the wife and I took in on one of our trips to the Pinehurst area.  For a good while, we would just look in the brochure and pick a new one.

I don’t know much about the course’s construction other than the information above.  We also didn’t spend much time in the clubhouse.  As such, this post will be strivtly about the golf.

Let’s get to it.  I played the blue tees.

Thanks again to Brian for the photos.  Check him out @virginiagolfguy on Instagram and vagolfguy.com. Continue reading “Legacy Golf Links”

Yet again we are coming to you from the Pinehurst area.  I played Little River on one of the many trips up with my wife.  The course is a short drive from Pinehurst proper.

The setting is serene and the course is not overly difficult.  It is a great spot to try and make a score, but not get too beat up.

Thanks again to Brian for the photos.  Check him out on Instagram @virginiagolfguy and at his website vagolfguy.com.

Let’s get into the tour.  All yardages are from the white tees. Continue reading “Little River Golf & Resort”

I remember the day I played here distinctly.  It was right after the end of tax season and I went up with a couple buddies to tee it up and catch the Celtics who were in town to play the then Charlotte Bobcats.  As an aside, the decision to go back to Hornets was obviously a great one. I was down to play this course after a summer working in the junior golf camps at Pinehurst.  After a summer spent practicing and playing in my “job” I was trying to qualify for the SC State Amateur.  This was obviously in the days where competing was still important to me.  It didn’t go well!  Now I am much more content to play for some money in match play or with a gimmie here or there.

Wyboo is conveniently located about 10 miles off of I-95.  As I remember the pricing is very affordable and well worth your time if you’re in the area.

Once again, shout out to Brian from @virginiagolfguy on Instagram and vagolfguy.com for letting me use his pictures.  All distances are from the blue tees. Continue reading “Wyboo Golf Club”

True Blue was actually my first experience with the great Mike Strantz.  This will kick off back to back weeks of Strantz courses, so be on the lookout next week for another!

A quick backstory.  In one of my internships in college, I won a weekend at a beach condo of one of the partners in my firm.  I was very excited.

I was also a little nervous because my buddies were going down with me.  I didn’t want anything to happen to the condo because it would be a while until I started full time.  There was plenty of time to pull my offer if we messed something up!

Luckily none of that happened.  We partied pretty hard and met up with some good friends that were in the area as well.  I remember it for watching the ALCS between the Red Sox and Indians.  The Sox won and got the ring that year!  All my buddies were cheering for Cleveland because I don’t know how to pick friends apparently :).
