San Francisco/Scottsdale Trip Recap

The wife and I did our first longer trip of 2018 to San Francisco and Scottsdale in May.  San Francisco was added because I had an invite to San Francisco Golf Club that I could not turn down!

Look out for course tours of all the tracks coming up in the following weeks.

It was a week full of golf for me and full of relaxation for my wife.  Let’s get into some of the details of the trip.  Please feel free to ask any questions in the comments.

SF was a small part of the trip and we were really just there for the golf.  I’ll leave that part of the trip out of this recap, but be sure to check out the course tours for any tidbits.

COURSES PLAYED

  • San Francisco Golf Club
  • Lake Merced Golf Club
  • California Golf Club of San Francisco
  • Grayhawk Golf Club (Talon)
  • We-Ko-Pa Golf Club (Cholla)
  • We-Ko-Pa Golf Club (Saguaro)
  • Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club
  • Troon North Golf Club (Monument)
  • Troon North Golf Club (Pinnacle)

LODGING

We stayed at the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa.  That is a long name, but the place is great.  With low-slung, adobe style buildings you really get the desert feel.

Our room was awesome.  It was plenty large and came with a back patio my wife utilized a lot.  The bathroom had a wonderful shower and two sinks to ease the morning routine.

FOOD

We tried a few places around the area.  I don’t have them all in my memory bank, but there are solid options.  A few that I can recommend I’ve listed below.

  • Twisted Grove Parlor & Bar
  • Grassroots Kitchen & Tap
  • Roaring Fork – try the “Big Ass” burger.  You’re welcome!
  • Diego Pops

NIGHTLIFE/BARS

We sampled a few of these around the area.  Here’s a little about each one to wet your whistle.

  • R Bar – this is right on campus at the Camelback Inn.  It has ample outdoor space, but we avoided that with the May heat.  They serve a decent wine list and had some local beers on tap that I definitely recommend.
  • Coach House – located in Old Town Scottsdale this self-described dive bar may look a little rough and tumble from the outside, but we enjoyed our visit during Friday happy hour.
  • Scapegoat Beer and Wine – an intimate setting and small bar allow for a relaxed experience.

SERVICE

We had great service pretty much across the board.  Nothing bad to report.

NON-GOLF ATTRACTIONS WE VISITED

Chase Field was a fun experience.  They had the roof closed when we arrived and it was comfortably cool.  At first pitch, they opened the roof and some panels.  I thought it would get warm, but we had awesome temperatures for the rest of the night.

Old Town Scottsdale was full of bars and restaurants like I mentioned above.  It was great for walking around and checking out the shops if that’s your thing.

My wife can recommend the spa at Camelback for sure.  Other than that, we were there for golf and relaxation.
